Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H Pala has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misleading the public over the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, claiming its true objective is to push forward the Delimitation Bill.

Speaking to reporters, Pala argued that the Women’s Reservation Bill had already been passed in 2023, and reintroducing it in the current session was a tactic to confuse citizens and pave the way for delimitation. He stressed that while the Congress fully supports women’s reservation, it strongly opposes linking the measure with delimitation, warning that the proposed framework lacks clarity on seat allocation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

Pala cautioned that such changes could disadvantage smaller and marginalised groups, pointing to shrinking opportunities in competitive examinations and reservations in jobs. He highlighted the growing reliance on contractual employment in institutions such as the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), which he said further undermines job security for youth.

The MPCC chief also criticised the BJP for failing to deliver on promises and pursuing policies that, in his view, erode public trust. He asserted that people in Meghalaya are politically conscious and “will not fall into such traps.”
