Shillong, April 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday reviewed proposals to diversify the Public Distribution System (PDS) and introduce a nutrition kit scheme aimed at improving the health of pregnant women and newborns.

Chairing a meeting with officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Sangma said the initiatives are aligned with the state’s Mission 1,000 Days programme, which focuses on maternal and child nutrition during the critical period from conception to a child’s second birthday.

The Chief Minister explained that the government is working to expand the range of nutritious and locally sourced food items available through the PDS, ensuring families benefit not only from food security but also from healthier diets. “The proposed Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme is aimed at supplementing the nutritional needs of expecting mothers and supporting healthier babies right from conception,” he said.
