Mizoram Governor VK Singh on Sunday reaffirmed the state government’s firm commitment to combating the growing menace of drug trafficking and abuse. Addressing the Republic Day celebration in Aizawl, Singh highlighted the significant efforts by law enforcement agencies in curbing cross-border smuggling and drug-related crimes.
He reported that in 2024, authorities seized over 12 lakh kg of smuggled foreign areca nuts worth Rs 16.6 crore, alongside large quantities of illicit drugs, arms, ammunition, and explosives. The state’s police and Excise and Narcotics Department arrested 4,568 individuals involved in drug offenses last year.
Governor Singh called for continued support from civil society organizations, NGOs, and religious groups in addressing this issue, urging collective action to combat the drug menace. He also touched on ongoing efforts to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute with Assam through negotiations.
The Governor also discussed the state’s developmental progress, including the launch of the ‘Bana Kaih’ scheme to support farmers and entrepreneurs, infrastructure development, and initiatives to enhance power generation and education. He concluded by emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving health, agriculture, tourism, and sports sectors.
