Aizawl, Apr 13: The Mizoram Election Department on Monday began a home voting exercise for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections, enabling more than 2,700 elderly voters, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and individuals with chronic illnesses to cast their votes from home.
The special voting initiative will continue until Thursday and covers all 19 wards under the municipal body. According to officials, a total of 2,769 registered voters are participating in the home voting process.
Among the participants was 102-year-old Nghakliani of Dawrpui Veng, who took part in the home voting facility.
Election officials said Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and polling materials were transported securely from the District Election Officer’s office. The process is being supervised by Municipal Returning Officers (MROs) along with a General Observer to ensure compliance with election procedures.
The AMC elections will see a total of 68 candidates in the fray, including 28 women candidates. The Zoram People’s Movement, Mizo National Front, and Indian National Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated 11 candidates.
Polling for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections is scheduled for April 21, with counting of votes set for April 27.
