Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Highlights State’s Development Priorities at 73rd NEC Plenary Meeting

Agartala, June 04, 2026: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang participated in the 73rd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC), chaired by Union Home Minister and NEC Chairman Amit Shah, in the presence of Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Governors, and Chief Ministers from across the North Eastern states.

Addressing the meeting, Tamang highlighted Sikkim’s key development priorities in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He emphasized sectors such as organic agriculture, tourism, education, skill development, MSME growth, innovation, and infrastructure development as critical drivers of the state’s future progress.

The Chief Minister stressed the need to strengthen agricultural value chains and market linkages across the North Eastern Region. He also sought the continuation of the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) scheme to sustain the momentum of organic farming and urged the Centre to extend the benefits of the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) beyond 2027.

As the Convenor of the High-Level Task Force on Agriculture and Horticulture for Addressing Gaps in Value Chains and Market Linkages in the North Eastern Region, Tamang presented the Task Force’s recommendations through a comprehensive presentation. The report proposed strategic interventions to strengthen value chains, improve market access, enhance agricultural productivity, promote value addition, and ensure sustainable growth in the agriculture and horticulture sectors across the region.

The Chief Minister also raised concerns over recurring flash floods affecting Sikkim and called for a permanent solution to connectivity issues along National Highway 10. He urged the early completion of key road, rail, air, and digital infrastructure projects and sought immediate restoration measures for the Chungthang–Lachen road damaged in the Tarum Chu area of North Sikkim.

“The deliberations reflected a shared commitment towards unlocking the immense potential of the North Eastern Region and advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development for the prosperity of our farmers, communities, and future generations,” Tamang said.

Expressing gratitude, the Chief Minister thanked Amit Shah for his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment” to the development of the Northeast. He also acknowledged the support of Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Ministry of DoNER, the NEC Secretariat, the Government of Meghalaya led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and the governments of Assam and West Bengal for their hospitality and arrangements during the meeting.

Tamang further appreciated the efforts of officers, protocol teams, security personnel, and support staff who contributed to the successful conduct of the important regional gathering, reaffirming the collective resolve to build a stronger, more prosperous, and self-reliant North Eastern Region.
