Agartala, April 16, 2026: Tension prevailed in Ambassa of Tripura after a 13-year-old girl was critically injured due to electrocution, triggering protests that turned violent and left several police personnel injured, officials said on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening when a live electric wire reportedly snapped and fell in the busy Ambassa market area under Dhalai district, they said.
The girl, identified as Bulti Modak, came into contact with the live wire and suffered severe injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses claimed that there was no storm or adverse weather at the time of the incident, raising questions over maintenance of power infrastructure by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited.
As news of the incident spread, angry residents gathered and marched to the local electricity office. The protest soon escalated, with a section of the crowd vandalising the premises, officials said.
Police personnel rushed to the spot to control the situation, during which Officer-in-Charge of Ambassa Police Station, Nandan Lal Das, and several other personnel sustained injuries.
The situation remained tense for several hours before being brought under control, they added.
Officials said this was the second such incident in the area within 10 days, fuelling public anger. Locals also recalled a similar electrocution incident during a Rath procession a few years ago that had resulted in multiple casualties.
Meanwhile, the sub-divisional administration has issued a show-cause notice to officials of TSECL, citing alleged negligence and failure to discharge duties.
The notice invoked provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005, asking the officials to explain within three days why action should not be initiated against them.
Authorities have appealed for calm and said appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for the incident as well as the violence, officials added.
