Agartala, December 25, 2025: Belonia in South Tripura is set to receive an advanced X-band Doppler Weather Radar, marking a significant step towards strengthening weather forecasting and disaster management in the state. The high-end radar system will be installed at the newly built District Magistrate (DM) Office Complex and will be set up, operated and maintained by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

With a monitoring range of up to 100 kilometres, the X-band Doppler Weather Radar will enable high-resolution, real-time tracking of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, cyclones, lightning and other extreme weather events affecting South Tripura and surrounding regions. Officials said the system will greatly improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and early warnings.

Addressing a press conference at the District Magistrate’s Conference Hall on Wednesday, District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P said the IMD is targeting to complete the installation and commissioning of the radar before the onset of the forthcoming monsoon season. He described the initiative as part of a wider effort to enhance weather surveillance and disaster risk reduction across Tripura.

The briefing was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debashish Das and IMD meteorologist Dr Partha Roy, who explained that X-band radars are particularly effective in detecting localized and fast-developing weather systems.

The DM noted that the Belonia radar will be Tripura’s second Doppler Weather Radar, supplementing the one that has been operational in Agartala since 2011. Once both systems function together, they will provide broader spatial coverage and more precise meteorological data for South Tripura and neighbouring areas.

Officials said the new radar will significantly strengthen coordination between the IMD and the state administration, improving preparedness, response and mitigation during extreme weather conditions. The enhanced monitoring is expected to help reduce loss of life and property, especially during the monsoon and cyclone seasons.
