Agartala, May 26, 2026: The Tripura Cabinet on Monday approved the introduction of a five-day work week in all government offices across the state with immediate effect, while also withdrawing the earlier arrangement under which 50 per cent of Group C and Group D employees were allowed to work from home.
Announcing the decision at a press conference, Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said all government offices will now remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The revised office timing has been fixed from 9:30 am to 6 pm.
Previously, government offices observed holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, with office hours from 10 am to 5 pm.
The earlier work-from-home policy for a section of employees had been introduced following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation. Under that arrangement, 50 per cent of Group C and Group D employees attended offices on rotation while the remaining staff worked remotely.
“The government reviewed the entire matter and decided to revoke the revised work schedule that allowed 50 per cent of Group C and D employees to work from home,” Chowdhury stated.
The minister further said the Cabinet also discussed austerity measures in view of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and stressed the need to reduce fuel consumption in government functioning.
As part of the measures, around 75 per cent of official meetings will now be conducted in hybrid mode. Department heads have also been directed to cut fuel expenditure in their respective offices.
Chowdhury added that the government would not encourage the hiring of electric vehicles for official use.
