Agartala, June 15, 2026: Commuters staged a protest at Jirania railway station on Monday morning, alleging gross negligence by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) over inadequate coach availability and severe overcrowding.

Angered by the daily ordeal, passengers blockaded two trains—one operating on the Agartala–Karimganj route and another on the Dharmanagar–Agartala route—bringing rail movement to a halt.

According to reports, the Karimganj-bound train departed Agartala with only five coaches, as has been the case on most days. The train was heavily overcrowded from its origin, forcing many passengers to climb onto the engine due to lack of space inside the compartments.

When the train reached Jirania station via Jogendranagar, a large number of waiting passengers were unable to board as all coaches were already packed beyond capacity. Frustrated passengers, despite holding valid tickets, were left stranded, prompting them to block the Karimganj-bound train. Simultaneously, another group of commuters blocked the Dharmanagar–Agartala passenger train at the station.

Police and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel rushed to the spot following the incident. While they initiated discussions with the agitating commuters, the blockade continued for a prolonged period.

The disruption caused significant inconvenience to daily commuters, including government employees traveling in both directions. Protesters alleged that the railway authorities have consistently failed to address the issue of insufficient coaches despite repeated complaints.

They asserted that such a situation could have been avoided had adequate arrangements been made to accommodate the growing number of passengers. The protesters also warned that they would continue their agitation until they receive concrete assurances regarding a permanent solution and an increase in the number of coaches.

At the time of filing this report, around 10:10 AM, both passenger trains remained stranded at Jirania station due to the ongoing blockade.
