Agartala, June 18, 2025: The Tripura government is intensifying efforts to enhance its social welfare infrastructure with a series of initiatives aimed at empowering persons with disabilities (PwDs), supporting cancer patients, strengthening women’s safety and expanding Anganwadi services across the state.
At a press conference held at the state secretariat in Agartala city on Tuesday, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy announced that the government has taken steps to ensure 100% social allowance coverage for all eligible disabled individuals aged 10 and above, whose annual family income is within Rs 1 lakh, a figure that currently includes over 60% of the state’s disabled population.
As part of this initiative, the state had organized a special camp at Swami Vivekananda Maidan on December 18-19, 2023, where 2,537 disabled persons were approved for the allowance and are now receiving monthly benefits. A second phase of this initiative is underway with 658 new applications currently being processed this month.
To promote inclusion through sports, the department will soon launch the “Khelo Tripura Para Games”, aimed at encouraging participation among the disabled community.
In support of cancer patients, a dedicated Help Desk was launched at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Hospital on May 1 enabling patients to apply for social allowance. So far, 118 applications have been received and are under review.
Additionally, under the Mission Shakti scheme, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has approved two new One Stop Centers (OSCs) for Agartala and Kailashahar aimed at providing legal aid, police support, counseling and temporary shelter to women under one roof. These centers are being set up with a central allocation of Rs 60 lakh for new construction and Rs 10 lakh for renovation each.
Tripura currently operates 10,222 Anganwadi Kendras with 53 new Kendras opened last month alone. Under the ‘Dharatri Aaba Janjati Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA)’, 119 more Kendras have been sanctioned with Rs 14.68 crore from the central government.
Furthermore, under the PM Janman Scheme, 141 Anganwadi Kendras were approved in 2024–25, while 85 additional Kendras have been sanctioned for the 2025–26 financial year, backed by Rs 10.20 crore in central funding. Once operational, Tripura will have a total of 10,567 Anganwadi Kendras enabling the recruitment of 345 Anganwadi workers and 345 helpers.
“The state is committed to inclusive and equitable social development, especially for vulnerable groups,” Minister Roy stated, as senior officials from the department attended the briefing.
