Agartala, January 29, 2026: In a significant stride toward energy self-reliance and financial empowerment, 740 households across Tripura have not only eliminated their electricity bills this quarter but also earned income by supplying surplus solar power to the grid. The development comes under the ambit of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Centre’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, which is gaining strong traction in the state.
According to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu, these consumers collectively received ₹2.64 lakh as payment for the excess electricity they generated and exported over the past three months. Each of them had installed rooftop solar panels under the scheme, transforming their homes into micro power stations.
“This initiative is redefining the role of electricity consumers,” Basu said. “People are no longer just paying for power—they are producing it, using what they need, and earning from the rest.”
The scheme’s impact is visible not only in reduced household expenses but also in the growing adoption of clean energy. With electricity bills reduced to zero and direct financial transfers from TSECL, participating families are experiencing tangible economic relief.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath has hailed the shift as a quiet revolution in the state’s energy landscape. Emphasizing the finite nature of fossil fuels, he reiterated the government’s commitment to renewable energy, particularly solar, as a sustainable and income-generating alternative.
The state government has set an ambitious target to bring 50,000 households under the scheme by 2027. The program is designed to be inclusive—solar panels can be installed on rooftops, tin sheds, or ground-mounted platforms, ensuring accessibility even for homes without concrete structures.
Funded with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore for the 2023–24 to 2026–27 period, the scheme offers generous subsidies to encourage participation. Households can avail ₹33,000 per kilowatt for the first 2 kW of installed capacity, and ₹19,800 for the next 1 kW, amounting to a maximum subsidy of ₹85,800 for 3 kW systems.
As Tripura’s rooftops turn into revenue-generating assets, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is not just lighting homes—it’s illuminating a path toward economic resilience and environmental sustainability.
