Agartala, October 27, 2025: Tripura Police have arrested a woman digital content creator, identified as Madhavi Biswas, on charges of circulating obscene material through social media platforms, officials said on Monday.
According to police sources, the arrest was made late Sunday night after a complaint was lodged by Paramita Ghosal, a resident of Ramnagar. A police team from West Agartala station later conducted a raid at Biswas’s residence in Jogendranagar, West Tripura district, and took her into custody.
“Biswas has been accused of spreading obscene content online. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). She will be produced before the court on Monday,” said Rana Chatterjee, officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station.
Biswas, known on Facebook for her outspoken videos criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, had earlier faced a similar complaint last month at East Agartala police station after she commented on the Prime Minister’s brief visit to the Maa Tripura Sundari temple. At that time, she was detained and questioned by police.
Meanwhile, the Tripura Human Rights Organisation (THRO) has condemned her arrest, terming it an attempt to stifle dissent. “Police had been warning her to stop posting videos critical of the government. Her arrest is clearly an effort to suppress free speech. We demand her unconditional release,” said senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, a member of THRO.
Police officials said further investigation into the case is underway.
