Agartala, June 02, 2026: Allegations of stalled rural development and administrative inaction triggered a confrontation at the Amarpur Block office on Tuesday, as Pradhans and Up-Pradhans from ten Gram Panchayats met Block Development Officer (BDO) Sanjib Debnath to seek clarification on the status of various government-sponsored development projects.

According to the Panchayat representatives, civic services in villages under the block have remained disrupted for nearly three months, while implementation of several government schemes has come to a standstill. They alleged that since assuming office three months ago, the BDO has failed to maintain communication with elected Panchayat representatives and has been handling Panchayat affairs unilaterally.

The delegation claimed that when they approached the BDO to discuss the issues, he reacted aggressively, leading to a heated exchange between the two sides. The representatives further alleged that no Standing Committee meetings have been convened since the officer took charge, despite government rules requiring such meetings to be held every month.

There are also allegations that the BDO has not maintained regular consultations with local elected representatives regarding development activities.

However, BDO Sanjib Debnath rejected all allegations, describing them as baseless. He asserted that development work has been progressing smoothly across all Panchayats and that government programmes are being implemented as per guidelines.

The incident has drawn attention to the functioning of the Amarpur Block administration, with Panchayat leaders now demanding a thorough inquiry by the district administration into the matter. All eyes are on the authorities to determine whether an official investigation will be initiated to address the growing concerns surrounding rural development in the block.
