Agartala, May 12, 2025: In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, police at Churaibari in Dharmanagar Sub-division seized a freight vehicle carrying 960 kg of cannabis hidden inside broken electrical transformers. The seizure was made around 10:30 a.m. on Monday during routine checking at the Naka Point in front of Churaibari Police Station under North Tripura District.
According to Churaibari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khokan Saha, “Our team was conducting regular vehicle inspections when we stopped a six-wheeler vehicle bearing registration number UP58AT1128, which was heading from Agartala to Guwahati. On suspicion, we detained the vehicle and initiated a thorough search.”
OC Saha immediately alerted Dharmanagar Sub-divisional Police Officer B. Jerinpui and North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, who arrived promptly at the scene along with other officials. The vehicle was found to be transporting 10 broken transformers, which, upon inspection, were found to contain 96 packets of cannabis weighing a total of 960 kg.
“We found the contraband cleverly hidden inside damaged electrical transformers. This was a well-planned attempt to avoid detection,” said SP Avinash Rai.
The driver identified as Adres Kumar Sachchan (42), and the co-driver Pramab Kumar—both residents of the Kanpurnagar area under Vidhu Police Station in Uttar Pradesh were arrested on the spot. Police registered a case under the NDPS Act and took both into custody.
“During preliminary interrogation, the duo admitted they were transporting the ganja from Khayerpur bypass in Agartala to Guwahati,” said SDPO B. Jerinpui.
Both accused will be produced before the district court tomorrow. The investigation is ongoing to identify other links in this smuggling network.
