The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) on Wednesday claimed that its armed wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF), engaged in a gun battle with Kuki underground outfits in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.

In a statement issued by ZUF S. Kamson, the outfit said the encounter took place at around 7.40 am at Kharam Vaiphei village in the Sadar Hills area of Kangpokpi district. The group alleged that at least two to three Kuki cadres may have been seriously injured in the exchange of fire, while claiming that ZTF personnel returned safely to their camp.

The ZUF said the action was compelled by what it described as serious concerns, including the submission of a topographical map in support of demands for a Separate Administration, alleged illicit poppy cultivation, activities along German Road and Tiger Road, and the establishment of unauthorised camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework within what it termed Zeliangrong Inpui traditional territory.

Clarifying its position, the ZUF stated that it does not oppose the legitimate aspirations of the Kuki people within their recognised native land. However, it asserted that no Kuki land exists within Zeliangrong Inpui ancestral territory.

The outfit reaffirmed its commitment to protect its people, land and property, and warned that any form of encroachment would not be tolerated. It also urged those allegedly occupying the areas unlawfully to vacate immediately to avoid further escalation.
