Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has put forward a proposal to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to rename the historic railway town of Badarpur in Barak Valley as “Siddheshwar Dham.” The move has already drawn attention because of the town’s deep-rooted cultural and historical identity.
Purkayastha explained that the renaming initiative is part of a larger vision for the development of Badarpur. He said the Chief Minister responded positively to the idea, though no formal decision has yet been taken. Stressing the importance of public consultation, the MLA noted that discussions would be held with residents and stakeholders to gather opinions before proceeding further.
The proposed name “Siddheshwar Dham” is linked to the area’s religious and spiritual significance. At the same time, the suggestion is expected to spark debate, as Badarpur is widely recognised for its railway heritage and its association with a revered Pir-Sannyasi shrine, a symbol of communal harmony and shared traditions in the region.
Rejecting claims that the proposal was politically motivated or timed to his recent election victory, Purkayastha said that promoting development while preserving cultural pride is a responsibility of an elected representative. He acknowledged that objections may arise but expressed confidence that the sentiment behind the proposal would be understood by those who value India’s civilisational and spiritual heritage.
Badarpur, one of the oldest settlements in the Barak Valley, has retained its name since the British era and continues to serve as a vital railway junction in southern Assam.
