Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has earned global recognition after its newly built Terminal 2 was featured in the prestigious Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Airports List 2026. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the honour, describing it as a proud moment that highlights the state’s evolving architectural identity and its integration of indigenous art and nature-inspired design.

In a statement shared on X, Sarma said the recognition demonstrates how Assam’s cultural heritage is being woven into modern infrastructure. “The world is taking note of Assam’s architectural identity. The new terminal of Guwahati Airport has been featured in the prestigious Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Airports List 2026, earning global recognition for a design that seamlessly blends indigenous art, local craftsmanship and nature-inspired narratives,” he wrote.

Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), India’s largest private airport operator, announced that both Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and Guwahati Airport’s Terminal 2 were included in the list. The award acknowledges design excellence, sustainability, and passenger-centric planning. Alongside the two Indian airports, international hubs in Guangzhou, Frankfurt, Kandal Stueng, Pittsburgh, and San Diego were also recognised.

The architectural language of Guwahati’s Terminal 2 is inspired by the ‘Bamboo Orchid’, symbolising the region’s biodiversity and ecological richness. The design integrates biophilic elements with sustainable functionality, positioning the airport as a monumental gateway to Northeast India. Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 1 was recognised for its lotus-inspired architecture and futuristic design, reflecting India’s aspirations as a modern global economy.

The Prix Versailles, presented annually at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris since 2015, honours contemporary creations that embody a synthesis of architecture, culture, and sustainability. Later this year, three airports from the 2026 list will also receive World Titles for interior or exterior design.

AAHL said the recognition validates its vision of developing airports that combine architectural excellence with operational efficiency. “We are honoured to see our airports recognised on a global platform and remain committed to delivering world-class experiences that position India among the leading aviation markets of the world,” a spokesperson noted.
