The Assam government on Tuesday declared a two-day state mourning on April 22 and 23 as a mark of respect following the death of Pope Francis.

The 88-year-old Pope passed away on Easter Monday. He had been diagnosed with double pneumonia and was the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years.

An official notification stated that the mourning is being observed to honour the late religious leader.
