Guwahati, July 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that Assam and Meghalaya are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at defining portions of their shared inter-state boundaries.
Taking to his official X handle, the Chief Minister highlighted that when Meghalaya was created in 1972, several stretches of its boundary with Assam remained ambiguous, often leading to confusion and tension.
Sarma recalled that in 2022, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, both states signed a historic MoU to begin resolving boundary disputes. So far, six out of twelve disputed areas have been settled and earmarked for demarcation work.
He noted that the erection of the first boundary pillars has begun, marking tangible progress. According to Sarma, the move provides clarity on administrative jurisdictions and paves the way for improved governance in areas that were earlier marked by uncertainty.
