The Indian Army has provided specialised high-altitude adventure equipment to the local community of Yumthang Valley to strengthen community-led tourism initiatives in the region.

The equipment, which includes camping gear, climbing essentials, safety items, cooking sets, and basic high-altitude support equipment, will help villagers set up structured adventure camps for the daily 20–25 tourists visiting the valley. This support enables local youth to offer guided trekking, camping, and other basic adventure experiences in a safe and organised manner.

Pema Dorjee, Pipon of Lachung Dzumsa, overseeing the community venture, said the assistance will allow local youth to organise adventure activities more confidently, manage tourism responsibly, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Army officials noted that the initiative aims to enhance local capacity, promote responsible tourism, and support economic growth in one of Sikkim’s most picturesque high-altitude regions. The effort is also part of the Army’s wider outreach programmes in North Sikkim, including Ranbhoomi Darshan, which promote border-area tourism and strengthen community engagement.
