Thousands of Congress workers marched through Tezpur on Sunday to mark the 140th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress, with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi calling on the state government to conduct a caste census in Assam.
The rally, which covered around six kilometres from Rajiv Bhavan to Jayamati Field, saw the participation of more than 5,000 party workers and supporters. Slogans in support of the Congress were raised during the march.
Addressing the gathering, Gogoi urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate a caste-based census, stating that communities in Assam, including tribal groups, should have access to accurate population data. He said that while certain population counts were being prioritised, data related to tribes and castes were being overlooked.
Gogoi also said the Congress was strengthening its organisational base across the state and claimed that booth-level programmes were held at around 19,000 locations as part of the foundation day celebrations. He expressed confidence about the party’s prospects in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
At the national level, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, hoisted the party flag at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. Party leaders reiterated the Congress’s commitment to constitutional values and inclusive development during the celebrations.
Founded on December 28, 1885, in Mumbai, the Indian National Congress observed its 140th Foundation Day with programmes held across the country.
