Aizawl, Feb 19: Tensions flared in the Mizoram Assembly on Wednesday as the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and opposition parties clashed over a controversial land deal for an Indian Air Force (IAF) base near Lengpui airport.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced a CBI investigation following allegations of financial irregularities worth Rs 187.90 crore. He accused the previous Mizo National Front (MNF) government of completing formalities for an outright land sale, including rate fixation and legal approvals, leaving only the fund transfer pending.
Defending his administration, Lalduhoma said the sale was stopped and converted into a lease, with preliminary and final notifications issued. Revenue Minister B Lalchhanzova added that the original intent of a permanent purchase was corrected by the ZPM government.
Opposition leaders, including MNF’s Lalthangliana, Leader of Opposition Lalchhandama Ralte, and Congress MLA C Ngurlianchhunga, demanded explanations and alleged possible commissions. Lalduhoma rejected claims of bypassing Social Impact Assessments, stating that the MNF had issued 120 No Objection Certificates for strategic projects during its tenure.
The Lengpui land, 32 km from Aizawl, is intended for IAF fighter aircraft and refuelling facilities. MNF and Congress have separately filed CBI complaints citing procedural lapses and irregular compensation, where two non-original owners reportedly received most of the funds. A CBI official in Aizawl confirmed the case has been referred to its Imphal branch.
