Shillong, March 18: The Meghalaya government revoked the suspension of internet services across all five districts of the violence-hit Garo Hills region on Wednesday, following a review of the improved law and order situation.

The restrictions, imposed on March 11 as a precaution after deadly clashes that killed two people, had disrupted mobile data and internet in West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, and South West Garo Hills districts. Protests had erupted in Tura and surrounding areas over a GHADC notification excluding non-tribals from tribal council elections, sparking vandalism and property damage.

An order from the Home (Police) Department confirmed the immediate lifting of the ban, bringing relief to residents, businesses, and educational institutions.

The government has also postponed the April 10 Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections to October to restore normalcy and ensure a fair democratic process.

Police have arrested several individuals linked to the unrest, with investigations ongoing and more detentions expected.
