Namchi, April 28: The District Hospital in Namchi has successfully conducted Sikkim’s first hybrid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedure of the genicular nerve, offering new hope for patients suffering from chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis. The intervention was carried out by Dr. Prasant Rasaily and the OT team of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department.

This minimally invasive technique provides relief to patients who are unsuitable for total knee replacement, representing a significant advancement in regional pain management. The hybrid RFA combines ultrasound imaging for real-time visualization of soft tissues with fluoroscopy for precise confirmation of bony landmarks, ensuring greater accuracy and safety in targeting genicular nerves.

Unlike conventional RFA, which relies solely on X-ray guidance, the hybrid approach allows physicians to avoid vascular structures and minimize risks to motor nerves. The dual imaging method enhances procedural safety, reduces complications, and improves outcomes for patients with severe osteoarthritis.
The successful execution of this procedure at Namchi District Hospital highlights Sikkim’s growing expertise in interventional pain management. It offers a viable alternative for patients seeking relief from chronic knee pain, potentially delaying or avoiding surgery while restoring mobility and quality of life.
