Joint Arunachal–Assam Border Survey Begins To Resolve Dispute

Itanagar, May 2: A joint survey to settle the long-standing Arunachal Pradesh–Assam boundary dispute has formally begun, with ground work underway across multiple sectors.

The exercise has started in East Siang and Lower Siang districts, with operations also scheduled in Lower Dibang Valley district, according to the TOI.

In the East Siang–Dhemaji sector, survey teams identified 19 locations for boundary pillars on day one. The work began from the Oyan–Jampani area and will proceed towards Depi village. Officials said the process was conducted smoothly.

The survey is being carried out with the Survey of India using geospatial technology for accurate demarcation. Joint teams comprising officials from both states, district administration, police, forest personnel, and local representatives.

The authorities stated the exercise is being done in phases. Three stretches covering about 56.57 km have been identified in the Lower Siang–Dhemaji sector, while two stretches of around 58.23 km will be covered in the Lower Dibang Valley–Tinsukia sector.

The move follows the Namsai Declaration of July 15, 2022, and the MoU signed in April 2023 between the two states, aimed at a peaceful and permanent resolution of the boundary dispute.
