Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday expressed solidarity with the people of West Bengal and Sikkim as heavy rains triggered severe landslides in the region, resulting in multiple fatalities and leaving thousands stranded.
In a post on X, Sarma stated that Assam is ready to extend all possible support for rescue and relief operations. “The loss of lives and widespread destruction in Darjeeling and other parts of North Bengal due to incessant rains deeply pains us,” he said.
Officials reported that the death toll in Darjeeling has risen to 24, with rescue teams continuing operations for several missing persons. Numerous tourists remain stranded in remote hill areas cut off by the disaster.
