Assam police arrested two residents of Mizoram for allegedly conducting unauthorized biometric data collection camps in Cachar district.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal stated that the suspects, identified as Vanlalrinchhana (33) and Raymond Vatha Chozah (34), had been living in Silchar for several months and organized facial recognition and biometric registration drives at a marriage hall earlier this week.
According to police, the duo collected facial impressions and biometric details of more than 200 local youths, offering them small payments of around ₹200. Participants were reportedly told the exercise was linked to an American multinational company and might lead to future opportunities.
Pal confirmed that the suspects failed to provide valid authorization or documentation for the activity. A case of cheating has been registered, with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 also invoked.
Police said unemployed youths were lured with promises of quick cash, while technical experts have been engaged to investigate the purpose behind the data collection. The two accused were produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded to two days of police custody.
