Assam BJP MLA Rupali Langthasa has stated that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not affect tribal communities in the state. She emphasised that tribal life would continue as it has for centuries, noting that the legislation would not harm tribal traditions or practices.
Langthasa also addressed remarks made in connection with the Pawan Khera case, saying that the Congress leader had wrongly accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife without proper knowledge. She added that the matter would proceed according to law.
Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that the Assam Cabinet has approved the implementation of the UCC, with the Bill scheduled to be introduced in the Legislative Assembly on May 26. He explained that the proposed law would cover marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, and the mandatory registration of marriages and divorces. Sarma further clarified that the framework has been tailored for Assam and that tribal communities would remain outside its scope.
