Guwahati, Feb 5: Bodoland Territorial Council Chief and United People’s Party Liberal president Pramod Boro said the party will contest all seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region and selected constituencies outside it in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, while remaining open to alliances.
In an interview with ANI, Boro said public opinion favours UPPL’s participation in the elections, leading to the decision to field candidates across BTR and in a few seats beyond the region. He stated that the party is currently holding discussions with the Bharatiya Janata Party and other political formations ahead of the enforcement of the model code of conduct.
Boro said UPPL is in alliance with the BJP at the state and national levels but is prepared to contest independently if required. He added that discussions with potential partners are ongoing.
The Assembly elections later this year are expected to see a contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Congress. On February 3, the Congress approved the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee election committee, naming Gaurav Gogoi as chairman. The committee includes 30 members such as Debabrata Saikia and Rakibul Hussain, along with APCC frontal organisation heads and department chairpersons as special invitees.
