Imphal, Dec 12: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur has accused the Congress party of having ties with Kuki organisations, alleging their shared support for similar demands, including the imposition of President’s Rule in the state.
BJP state general secretary K. Sharatkumar, speaking to reporters, cited a letter from the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council addressed to Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The letter urged the Congress to introduce a Kuki Political Solution Bill to create a separate Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo people, which Sharatkumar claimed is proof of the Congress’s links with Kuki organisations.
The BJP leader also alleged that Congress is backing the Kuki groups’ demands, which include the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Both Congress and Kuki organisations have been calling for President’s Rule in the state, Sharatkumar said.
Additionally, the BJP accused the Kuki Inpi Manipur of instructing Kuki voters to support Congress candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in exchange for the party’s backing of a separate political administration for the Kuki community.
The BJP also linked the ongoing violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, to Kuki separatist groups, claiming that these groups, including those under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact, have collaborated with Congress to influence the election process. Sharatkumar also referred to viral videos showing Kuki National Army members with sophisticated weaponry, suggesting foreign involvement in the violence.
