Shillong, June 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired a high-level review meeting with the Education Department on Wednesday to assess the state’s performance in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) and examine ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the education ecosystem.

Officials presented PGI indicators and outlined interventions to enhance learning outcomes, improve school infrastructure, expand vocational education and streamline data management. With nearly 14,600 schools serving a population of about 30 lakh, Meghalaya’s education network is among the most extensive in the Northeast.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education for every child, noting that “Learning Outcomes,” which carry the highest weightage in PGI, remain a central focus. Statewide initiatives are underway to improve foundational literacy and numeracy, support teacher welfare and provide student assistance.
Infrastructure upgrades include science laboratories, ICT facilities, smart classrooms, libraries, drinking water systems, and solar power installations. Vocational education is being expanded through the Community Skill Integrated Curriculum, while student welfare measures such as improved mid-day meals and sanitary pad vending machines in girls’ schools are being rolled out.
Sangma directed Deputy Commissioners to adopt a mission-mode approach to accelerate implementation and ensure timely delivery. He emphasized that education is a long-term investment and set the next goal of ensuring every school delivers quality learning.
