Centre Sanctions ₹273.46 Crore for Expansion of AGMC; Tripura to Get 100 Additional MBBS Seats and 83 PG Seats

Agartala, May 15, 2026: In a major boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has sanctioned ₹273.46 crore for the expansion and upgradation of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) under centrally sponsored schemes.

The approval includes enhancement of 100 MBBS seats at AGMC, increasing the intake capacity from 150 to 250 seats, including 15 EWS seats. The Centre will bear 90 percent of the project cost, amounting to ₹135 crore for MBBS seat expansion alone.

Besides MBBS expansion, the Centre has also approved enhancement of 83 Post Graduate (PG) seats across 19 critical and speciality disciplines at AGMC and GBP Hospital with a sanctioned cost of ₹123.46 crore. The central share for the PG seat enhancement stands at ₹111.11 crore.

Expressing gratitude over the approval, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for extending support to the state’s healthcare and medical education sector.

“I would like to thank Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri J.P. Nadda Ji for sanctioning ₹273.46 crores for infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College. It will help us in increasing 100 MBBS seats and 83 Post Graduation seats in 19 critical and speciality disciplines from the academic year 2026-27,” the Chief Minister said.

He further stated that with the addition of the newly sanctioned seats, Tripura will have a total of 550 MBBS seats and 196 PG seats, describing it as a record increase in the last four years.

“We are committed to improve the health services for citizens as well as medical education for the young aspirants in the state,” Dr. Saha added.

According to the official communication issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on May 13, the PG seat enhancement will cover departments including Dermatology, Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Surgery, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, Anatomy, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Respiratory Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology and ENT among others.

The Ministry has also requested the Tripura government to sign and return the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementation of the approved projects at the earliest.
